What to expect

Begin your adventure with pickup directly from RIU Playa Blanca Resort in Río Hato. Travel to the Chagres River, one of the largest rivers in the Panama Canal watershed, where your cultural adventure begins.

Board a traditional motorized wooden canoe, locally known as a piragua, and enjoy a scenic river journey surrounded by lush tropical rainforest as you make your way toward the Emberá indigenous community of Biakiru.

The Emberá people traditionally live along riverbanks and are well known throughout Panama for their distinctive music, traditional dances, colorful clothing, and beautiful handicrafts. Originally from the Darién region of Panama and the Chocó region of Colombia, the Emberá have preserved their traditions and way of life for generations.

Upon arrival, spend approximately 3 hours discovering the community, meeting local families, and learning about their history, culture, and daily activities.

After this memorable cultural experience, board the piragua for the return journey along the river. Our transportation will be waiting to take you comfortably back to RIU Playa Blanca Resort in Río Hato.

Discover the traditions, hospitality, and natural beauty of the Emberá community of Biakiru in an unforgettable cultural experience.
