The Rongai route is more exhilarating as it gives you an opportunity to trek through two ways, ascend through the Rongai path and descend through Maragu way. It ascend the highest point of Africa, that is, MT Kilimanjaro from the north-eastern side of the mountain passing along the border of Kenya and Tanzania. It has a unique weather and vegetation state which give added advantage to the trekkers at the wilderness.
Upon arrival at the Kilimanjaro international airport, you will be welcome by the Kilimanjaro International Tours and Safari officials. Be brief on the safari. They will as well check on the kit for all climbers to ensure they have all the requirements at the place of overnight. Dinner and overnight will be at your arrangements
Wake up for an early breakfast. Drive to Maragu gate. After completion of registration at the marriage national park gate, transfer to Rongai starting point. You will begin your climb from the attractive wooden village of the Nale Moru, 1,950m before entering a pine forest. Later, climb gently through the forest that shelters a variety of wildlife, for example, the Kilimanjaro colobus monkey. The forest will be growing thinner, but the first camp is at the edge of the moorland zone-2,600m. Dinner and overnight to spend at Rongai first camp.
Ascend to the second cave, 3450m with superb views at the Kibo and the Eastern ice fields on the crater rim. After lunch meals leave the main trail towards the jagged peaks of mwenzi. Place of overnight to be spent at the Kikelewa Camp which is sheltered in the valley near giant senecious, 3600m
Walk up the grassy slopes which are rewarded by a great sense of the wilderness. Leave the vegetation behind at a small distance before arriving at the Mawenzi Tarn (4,330m). It is situated at the cirque directly beneath the towering spires of Mwenzi. At noon, you will have time to rest as an aid to acclimation or explore the surrounding. It will be a day of acclimation, but with a short distance walk of around 2 hours up to the saddle. Evening and overnight at Mawenzi Tarn Camp
Cross the lunar desert to reach the Kibo campsite (4,700m) at the bottom of the crater. The remaining daytime gets to rest in preparation for the final ascent of around 6- 7 hours walking. Dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut
At midnight, start the climb to the steepest part with the aid of torchlight. Stroll through the switchback trail along volcanic scree to reach the crater rim at Gillman’s Point (5,685m. Take a rest for a short while enjoying the sunrise over the Mawenzi. There will be an optional activity to those who will feel strong; they will make a three hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (8965m). Descend to Kibo (4,700m) up to the final campsite at Horombo where evening meals and overnight will take place
A steady descend through the moorland to Mandara Hut will take you to Marangu route. Continue descending the lovely lush forest to the National Park Gate at Marangu (1,830m). Transfer to hotel on your arrangements for dinner and overnight before flying back home.
