The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı in Turkish) is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, located in Istanbul, Turkey. Here are the key details: History • Construction began in the mid-15th century, shortly after the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. • It was originally commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II (Mehmed the Conqueror). • Over centuries, it expanded into a massive commercial hub. Layout & Scale • The bazaar spans 61 covered streets and has over 4,000 shops. • It covers around 30,700 square meters (7.5 acres). • It’s often described as a “city within a city,” with mosques, fountains, hammams (Turkish baths), and even a police station. What You’ll Find • Jewelry: gold, silver, precious stones. • Textiles: carpets, kilims, fabrics, scarves. • Ceramics: hand-painted Iznik tiles, pottery. • Spices & sweets: Turkish delight, saffron, dried fruits. • Antiques & souvenirs: lamps, calligraphy, Ottoman-style décor.
• Built in the 17th century as part of the New Mosque (Yeni Camii) complex in the Eminönü district. • Its name “Egyptian Bazaar” comes from the fact that it was originally financed with taxes collected from Egypt during the Ottoman Empire. • Historically, it was the center of spice trade in Istanbul. ️ Layout & Atmosphere • Smaller and easier to navigate than the Grand Bazaar. • Features 85–100 shops arranged along a long, L-shaped covered arcade. • The air is filled with the aromas of spices, herbs, and sweets, creating a very sensory experience ️ What You’ll Find • Spices & herbs: saffron, sumac, cumin, chili, cinnamon, mint, and many more. • Teas & infusions: apple tea, rose tea, linden, herbal mixes. • Turkish delights (lokum) and sweets: pistachio, rose, pomegranate. • Dried fruits & nuts: figs, apricots, dates, hazelnuts, almonds. • Natural remedies & oils: medicinal herbs, essential oils. • Souvenirs: ceramics, small trinkets, and decorative items
