The building complex occupies an area of more than 12 hectares, measuring roughly 290 by 420 meters. The building's primary axis is oriented toward the Kaaba in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, by a rotation of roughly 12° south of true west. The project was launched by the late president of the U.A.E., Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who wanted to establish a structure that would unite the cultural diversity of the Islamic world with the historical and modern values of architecture and art In 2004, Sheikh Zayed died and was buried in the courtyard of the mosque.

Experience the customs of the desert lifestyle by visiting the Heritage Village, where you can immerse yourself in a time capsule that revives a souk, a mosque, and an encampment from Abu Dhabi's pre-modern era. In addition to shopping and exploring artifacts, you can watch artisans create pottery, blow glass, and weave cloth on a loom. This recreation of a traditional oasis village, managed by the Emirates Heritage Club, offers a fascinating look into the history of the emirate and includes open-air workshops where artisans showcase age-old techniques like spinning, weaving, metal work, and ceramics. The artisans teach the guests about their craft and sometimes give them an opportunity to try it out.
