Day one on the Marangu Route involves hiking from Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut, a trek of about 5-6 hours through a rainforest. After registration at the park gate, hikers will begin their ascent, potentially spotting wildlife like colobus and blue monkeys. Some itineraries also include a short side trip to the Maundi Crater for views before descending back to the Mandara Huts for the night.
Day 2 of the Marangu Route takes hikers from Mandara Hut (\(2,740\text{m}\)) to Horombo Hut (\(3,700\text{m}\)) over a 5-6 hour hike. The trek begins in the remaining rainforest before moving into the moorland zone, offering views of Mawenzi and Kibo. After settling in at Horombo, you can relax or take a short, optional stroll to Maundi Crater for panoramic views, notes Viva Africa Tours and Twanga Touring.
Day 3 of the Marangu Route involves an acclimatization hike from Horombo Hut, either to Mawenzi Hut and back, or a similar acclimatization trek toward Kibo Hut. The goal is to help your body adjust to the altitude, with the afternoon spent relaxing at Horombo Hut before dinner. The specific itinerary can vary depending on the length of the trek (e.g., 5, 6, or 7 days).
Day 4 of the Marangu Route is a 5-7 hour trek from Horombo Hut (3,700m) to Kibo Hut (4,700m), a distance of about 10km. The hike crosses the Saddle, a stark, treeless alpine desert that connects Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. After arriving at Kibo Hut, hikers rest and prepare for the summit climb, which usually begins around midnight.
Day 5 of the Marangu Route is the final day of the climb, involving a descent from Horombo Hut to the Marangu Gate, a journey of about 18 km that takes approximately 5 to 7 hours. After a final breakfast and farewell to the crew, you will descend through the rainforest, stop at Mandara Hut for lunch, and then continue to the Marangu Gate where you will receive your summit certificate. A vehicle will then transport you back to your hotel in Moshi.
This 6 days Marangu Route on Kilimanjaro allows for a more gradual ascent and better acclimatization, increasing your chances of reaching the summit successfully. as it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope and direct path. It is the oldest and the most well established route on the Kilimanjaro. This is the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style.
