The M’Goun valley is located in the central part of the High Atlas Mountains and is home to the second highest peak in Morocco, Jebel M’Goun. The M’Goun summit is a popular destination for hikers and trekkers who would like to test their skills before tackling bigger adventures.
Even if you have lots of experience, the M’Goun Massif has plenty for you to enjoy as an Atlas Mountains tour. You’ll be further out from Marrakech than if you were visiting the Toubkal region and the scenery and the landscape are simply stunning.
We will pick you up from Marrakech and drive you to Agouti by minibus in the morning. We will arrive in the late afternoon, so you will have some time to relax, take in your surroundings and orient yourself. We will stay in a lovely guesthouse located in Agouti itself.
After breakfast we will begin our trek by hiking for 4 hours or so to Arouss. Along the way we'll pass through some great countryside and quite a few traditional Berber villages. In the evening, we will make camp and you'll sleep in Arouss for the night.
When you awake, we will begin our trek to the foot of M'Goun. It will be quite a long day (perhaps 7 or 8 hours of walking) but the journey itself will make it worthwhile! We'll take you through some wild Moroccan landscape to the Aghouri pass at 3450m before descending to the wind-eroded and snow-covered high plateau of Tarkedit at 2900m where we will have our lunch. After our food, we will establish a camp at 3400m directly below M'goun West, ready for our attempt on the summit.
Today we make our ascent to the summit of Jebel M'Goun. The trek follows a long ridge, all at or above 4,000m, which typically takes between 4 and 5 hours to the summit, depending on snow conditions. From the top, there are impressive views across the Draa valley and towards the Sahara Desert to the south. When we descend, we'll head to our camp at Azib Izabine and take some time for a rest!
In the morning, we will take you down the valley into Ain Aflafal and to Tighermet n Ait Ahmed where will finish for the day and make our camp for the night.
On our final day of the trek, we will climb Tizi n'Ait Imi to 2960m and then enjoy a long descent to the Ait Bougmez valley. Finally, we will take you back to Marrakech and back to your riad or hotel.
