The Sirwa Massif lies to the south of the Toubkal National Park on the boundary between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas. It is a beautiful part of the country and a fantastic area to go trekking in Morocco. It is filled with plunging valleys and soaring mountain peaks and it contains old Berber villages surrounded by almond trees and fields of saffron. Sirwa is the only place in Morocco where saffron is harvested.

The snow-capped Sirwa peak itself is actually an ancient, extinct volcano and rises to 3305m; a good 300m higher than its surrounding counterpart peaks.

This is an extraordinary Atlas Mountains tour and you’ll get to travel through some of the most fascinating and wild areas in Morocco!

Itinerary

Duration: 7 days (approximately)
    Day 1

    Marrakech to Talioune to Akhfamane

    1 stop
  • 1
    Medina of Marrakesh

After an early pick up from Marrakech we'll arrive in Maliouine (984m). Maliouine is a major trailhead for treks in the Toubkal Sirwa Massif and its here that we load our mules and set off for the first part of the trip. Initially, it is a straightforward and easy walk of about 4 or 5 hours to Akhfamane (1250m) where you will spend the night in a Berber gite. (Alternatively we can drive to Akhfamane if we arrive too late from Marrakech).

6 hours Admission ticket not included
  • Day 2

Akhfamane to Mazwad to Ti n’Iddr

    1 stop
  • 2
    Medina of Marrakesh

Today’s hike takes us along two river valleys and eventually up to our camp site at Ti n’Iddr (1600m) with a total of about 6 hours walking. The area is generally open without much shade so be prepared if it is hot! We'll travel through several small typical Berber villages surrounded by terraces and get some great views of the Moroccan countryside.

  • Day 3

    Ti n’Iddr to Guilez

    1 stop
  • 3
    Medina of Marrakesh

Today is a more demanding day and you'll do around about 6 – 7 hours of walking. We'll gradually climb 1000m to Tegragra at 2650m where we'll set up our camp for the night. Be prepared for some (at times) difficult walking. We'll pass through Atougha, (the last village before Sirwa) and once we're through, the trail starts to zig zag and becomes narrow and steep. We'll pass just below Jebel Guiliz (2905m) before arriving at a large pool where we will set up camp for the night.

6 hours Admission ticket not included
  • Day 4

Tegraga to Jebel Sirwa summit to Tizgui

    1 stop
  • 4
    Medina of Marrakesh

We'll be making an early start today, to avoid the midday heat, so prepare for a prompt breakfast and wake up call. We'll start trekking for the summit of Mount Sirwa (3305m) with an ascent of 2 – 3 hours over difficult terrain that involves steep climbs, some scrambling and ridge walking. This will all be worth it when you reach the summit: the views are breathtaking and well worth the effort! We will then make a 4 hour descent to Tizgui (2200m) where you'll camp for the night.

6 hours Admission ticket not included
  • Day 5

    Tizgui to Tagouyam to Tizlit

    1 stop
  • 5
    Medina of Marrakesh

In the morning, we continue our gradual descent, passing through a number of Berber villages on our way down to Tizlit (1700m). At Tizlit, after 5 hours walking, we'll set up our next camp for the night.

6 hours Admission ticket not included
  • Day 6

    Tizlit to Ifrane to Tinfat

    1 stop
  • 6
    Medina of Marrakesh

Today's distance will be quite big (about 20km!), but you should find it easy going. The trek will continue our our gradual descent and you'll journey through terraced fields and small Berber villages to arrive, finally, at Tinfat. You'll spend the final night here in a Berber gite or maybe camping if you prefer.

6 hours Admission ticket not included
  • Day 7

    Tinfat to Taliouine to Marrakech

    1 stop
  • 7
    Medina of Marrakesh

From Tinfat you'll be transferred back through Taliouine to Marrakech. And from there, its up to you!

6 hours Admission ticket not included
