In May 1940, the Zuydcoote Sanatrium was converted into a field hospital for the retreating allied troops and operated until the end of the evacuation. Nearby on the beach the wreck of Crested Eagle can be seen at low tide, it was attacked by German dive bombers and sunk on 28th May 1940
The fort des dunes, also known as the Leffrinckoucke fort was build in 1878 to protect Dunkirk. It served in May and June 1940 as the headquarters of the French 12th Division.
The Dunkirk Memorial is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission memorial to the missing that commemorates 4,505 missing dead of the British Expeditionary Force
