For a relatively small city with a dominantly catholic tradition, Jewish heritage in Split makes an incredibly important part of history. They had a considerable influence on the local economy - they built a free port and opened the first bookshops. The Jewish community of Split is one of the oldest in Europe.
The archaeological excavation from the nearby Roman Salona prove that the Jews had lived there with the Romans before moving to Split. Those Jews were known as the Romaniote Jews. In two millennia of its existence, the Jewish community in Split faced many challenges, including the toughest: World War II.

Old Jewish cemetery from 1573. To reach the cemetery there is an ascent, about 15 minutes walk with lots of stairs, so keep in mind that this is not for everyone
