There are three national parks in the close proximity within that region. They are the Minneriya National Park, the Kaudulla National Park, and the Hurulu Eco Park,. All of the three parks are immensely popular among locals and foreigners the world over for their large herds of elephants. Generally, each year during the months of July to September large groups of elephants are found in the Minneriya National Park and then they migrate to Kaudulla National Park during the months October to November due to high rains and lakes getting filled up. Then the elephants move on to Hurulu Eco Park for the final leg of their migration during the month of December to January.

What to expect

This intensive safari experience will give you the chance to go on a game drive through the Hurulu Eco Park. The park is known for its verdant nature and rich ecosystem. In addition, your safari guide you will help you catch sight of a number of flora and fauna native to Sri Lanka. Avid birdwatchers will love this safari as well. You will be travelling in a rough terrain (4WD) game vehicle.

The Hurulu Eco Park in Habarana is part of the Hurulu Forest Reserve, and lies alongside several other reserves and national parks (including Kaudulla and Minneriya). Spanning over 10,000 hectares, the park includes dry evergreen forests, waterways, rich grasslands and abandoned cultivation lands. Some cultivation lands within the reserve area are still in use by farmers who use shifting cultivation, and has resulted in the occasional human-elephant conflict.
