of you visit), visit the plant and seed nurseries commercial vegetable farms, orchards, dairies and tea plantations.
Later on, the evening visit the Coconut Research Institute, Marawila The Coconut Research Institute (CRI) is a National Institute founded in 1929 as the Coconut Research Scheme under the Coconut Research Ordinance No. 24 of 1928. The scheme began its research activities with three Technical Divisions namely, Genetics, Chemistry and Soil Chemistry for assisting coconut growers with technical information on coconut cultivation. Following the enactment of the coconut Research Act No. 37 in 1950, it was renamed as the CRI of Ceylon. Since its establishment all scientific research on coconut in Sri Lanka were centered in it and gained national as well as international reputation for coconut research. Jim was a farmer in Suffolk, England for many years, and inspired Kevin to create his own sustainable organic farm in Sri Lanka. You can find out more about coconut farming or see the nuts being harvested (every six weeks) by our skilful pickers. There are over 2500 coconut palms, 500 banana palms, plus several hundred mango and papaya trees, providing delightful shade and wonderful vistas as they disappear off towards distant hills. We will explain the organic method of cultivating coconuts, bananas and other crops on the farm, including black pepper, mangoes, papaya, cinnamon, coffee and cocoa. We have free-range chicken and eggs. Plus we have our own cows to provide milk and organic manure.
After breakfast at the hotel, check out and proceed to Melsiripura Farm. Melsiripura farm consisted of four Divisions viz. Medamulla, Ragedara, Wagolla and Walpolayaya was taken over by the National Livestock Development Board during 1976-1977 periods. Melsiripura farm is situated on Kurunegala-Dambulla road approximately 28km from Kurunegala. (Time – 3hrs) Here you will get to know about the Coconut cultivation process & how the coconut is being plucked. Milking process from the cows, will be a new experience. CIC Seed Production Farm, the biggest seed production farm in Sri Lanka located at Hingurakgoda Divisional secretariat division in Polonnaruwa District. Polonnaruwa district is one of the famous paddy cultivation area in the country. Activates which you will be getting here are, paddy field. If you like you can get on to the paddy field & learn about the rice cultivation process. Once we are done here, you can visit the Fruit & vegetable farm within the farming site. The farm receives irrigation water from the Minneriya reservoir to produce high quality seed. (Time – 3hrs)
