Main Street or Dronningens Gade (Danish name meaning Queen’s Street) is the main street running through Charlotte Amalie. The buildings on the south side of Main Street are long, separated by narrow alleys. These were warehouses for storing goods during the heyday of trade. On the north side are a collection of 18th and 19th century classic West Indian buildings and former town houses. The buildings are square in shape and many are two stories with balconies. In the past the first floor housed shops; the second floor would have been the shop keeper’s residence. Today many of these old buildings are repurposed as duty free shops. You will have some time to roam Main Street and visit the shops and resturants in the area.
The 99 Steps is one of the most distinguishable landmarks in St. Thomas. The staircase is one of several 'step-streets' originally built by the Danes.
Historic property dating back to the 1600's. The resort occupies an entire hilltop with spectacular views overlooking the harbor and town of Charlotte Amalie. Its signature red rooftops are among the first sights for arriving cruise passengers.
We will make a stop at Blackbeard's Castle which is one of five National Historic Landmarks in the U.S. Virgin Islands. It is located in the city of Charlotte Amalie, on the island of St. Thomas. Built in 1679 by the Danes as a watchtower to protect the harbor as well as Fort Christian. Blackbeard's Castle was originally called Skytsborg (meaning protection castle). It is located at the highest point on Government Hill. Skytsborg served as a very effective vantage point for Danish soldiers to spot enemy ships. Fort Christian is at sea level, thus making it ideal for thwarting attackers with cannon fire; however, the fort itself did not provide an ideal view of incoming ships entering the harbor. You can vist the duty free shop or have a drink at Jolly Rogers bar- there is a pool available as well.
Skyline Drive Overlook offers a panoramic harbor view including Charlotte Amalie, Hassel Island, Water Island and more! You will be able to take pictures and indulge in this popular view site. It is a popular spot, so bring your camera.
St. Thomas is mountainous and offers beautiful views. The most popular lookouts are Drakes Seat and Skyline Drive Overlook. Drake’s Seat was built in 1933 by Arthur Fairchild. In those days navigating the hills of St. Thomas involved traveling by horse or foot. He thought the spot where he put Drake’s Seat was a nice place for a rest. You too can take a break and enjoy the fabulous view from the famous seat!
The overlook is located atop St. Peter Mountain–the island’s highest point–and has a vista of Magens Bay that rivals Drake’s Seat’s due to the higher elevation, which allows for a view of even more surrounding islands, including the British Virgin Islands. Visitors will find much more than just a great view at Mountain Top, however. The attraction is a good place to purchase souvenirs, clothes, and other gift items. Mountain Top is also famous for its signature drink, the banana daiquiri, which is made with a variety of flavors of local Cruzan Rum.
Magens Bay Beach is one of the most breathtaking beaches in the world and a must-visit while in St. Thomas. Located on the north (Atlantic) side of the island, this iconic beach features nearly three-quarters of a mile of soft white sand and calm, crystal-clear waters protected by the surrounding bay. It’s loved by visitors and locals alike for its beauty, peaceful atmosphere, and easy swimming conditions. The bay is framed by the Peterborg Peninsula and Tropaco Point, keeping the water usually calm year-round. While snorkeling is limited due to the sandy bottom, sea turtles, tarpon, conch, and tropical fish are often spotted close to shore. Your visit follows a scenic island tour with stops at Mountain Top, Drake’s Seat, and Skyline Lookout, then relax at Magens Bay or any beach of your choice. Beach time is flexible. Simply tell your driver when you’re ready to be picked up. Admission not included: $7 per adult, children under 12 free.
