Sintra After Dark: A Private Expedition into the Mystical Night
Step away from the tourist crowds and enter the shadows of the "Moon Mountain." This exclusive private night tour is a journey into the Dark Tourism side of Sintra, blending driving with rugged forest trekking. Guided by a local expert, you will uncover the mountain’s most enigmatic secrets: from the prehistoric burial site of Tholos do Monge and the hidden Loba Cave to the eerie ruins of the Fonte Velha Aqueduct.
As we traverse the forest under the moonlight, you will explore ancient pagan sites like the Goddess Stone and witness the breathtaking, windswept views from the Peninha Sanctuary. Please note: This experience involves approximately 3km of hiking on rocky, uneven terrain and is designed for the adventurous soul. It is a night of legends, mysteries, and the raw, haunting beauty of a Sintra that few ever see. Experience the mountain’s true spirit where history meets the supernatural.
If you take the train from Rossio Station (in Lisbon's historic center) or Oriente Station, the journey takes approximately 40 to 45 minutes, and you will get off at the very last station, which puts you right in the heart of the town, close to the historic center.
If you plan to return to Lisbon by train is better to check the last train. It is easy to get an Uber back to Lisbon
Tapada do Mouco & The Sentry Box Our night begins at the iron gates of Tapada do Mouco. Under the shadow of the mountain, we stop at the ancient stone sentry box (guarita) to set the stage for the legends and "dark history" that haunt these woods after the sun sets.
Tapada do Saldanha: The Rabbit Stone & Loba Cave We leave the car for a 1km trek through the dense forest. We will encounter the "Pedra do Coelho" (Rabbit Stone) before reaching the mysterious "Gruta da Loba" (She-Wolf Cave). This is a place of ancient echoes and deep mountain silence.
The Giant Sequoias & The Hidden Aqueduct Back in the vehicle, we head toward the entrance of the Sequoias. A short walk reveals the moss-covered Aqueduct of Tapada da Fonte Velha, a 19th-century stone structure that looks like a gateway to another world in the moonlight.
Tholos do Monge & The Lost Fountain This is the heart of the journey. We trek a rugged, stony path to the Tholos do Monge—a prehistoric burial site and the highest point of the mountain's ridge. Along the way, we visit a 19th-century fountain only recently rediscovered beneath the overgrowth.
The Sister Stones & The Goddess Stone As we approach the wilder side of the range, we stop at the "Pedras Irmãs" and the "Pedra da Deusa" (Goddess Stone). These massive granite formations have been associated with ancient pagan rituals and tell the story of Sintra’s prehistoric spiritual roots
Peninha Sanctuary: The Grand Finale Our final stop is the windswept sanctuary of Peninha. Perched on a jagged cliff overlooking the Atlantic, we climb to the highest viewpoint. Here, amidst the howling wind, you will hear the true, chilling history of this sacred and lonely site before we return to the station
