The original name was Porta Flaminia but it is officially known as Porta del Popolo. It was commissioned in 1562 by Pope Pius IV to Michelangelo who passed the task to the architect Nanni di Baccio Bigio who completed it in three years of work, in 1565.
The Spanish Steps are a set of steps dating from 1723, climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spagna at the bottom of the hill and Piazza Trinità dei Monti at the top. The Spanish Steps are still today like in the past is a place for artists, painters and poets to visit.
No trip to Rome is complete without visiting Trevi Fountain. It is the most beautiful fountain in the world. The origins of the fountain go back to the year 19BC in which period the fountain formed the end of the Aqua Virgo aqueduct. The first fountain was built during the Renaissance period under the direction of the Pope Nicolas V.
We will stop for Gelato at the famous Pantheon. The Pantheon is the only ancient Roman building that has remained practically intact through the centuries. Built between 25 and 27 BC Pantheon was a temple dedicated to pagan Gods it was completed by Hadrian around 126 AD. Since the 7th century the Pantheon has been in use as a Church dedicated to St. Mary and Martyrs.
With its beautiful fountains, baroque Palazzi, Piazza Navona is Rome's central elegant showcase square. Built over the 1st century Stadio di Domiziano it was paved over in the 15th century and for almost 300 years hosted the city main market.
