Phnom Kulen (Lychee Mountain) was founded at the beginning of Angkorian Civilization of the Khmer Empire. 

Phnom Kulen was the first ancient city, which is located 65 km north of Angkor region. This hill is regarded as the holy shrine for Hinduism and Buddhism in the past till now. In the past it was named Mahendrapura, but nowadays we know the place as Phnom Kulen. That city was established in the reign of king Jayavarman II (802 AD ).
