The Bombay Hills are a range of hills to the south of Auckland, New Zealand. Though only a small and seemingly insignificant range of hills, they lie at the southern boundary of the Auckland region, and serve as a divide between Auckland and the Waikato region. directly named after the ship Bombay, The ship itself was named after the Indian city of Bombay (now Mumbai). Bombay Means: a breed of black short-haired medium-sized cat.
We stop to get some great coffee at your own expense and a comfort break before we continue our journey into the Waikato region.
We will also pass through the unique town of Tirau (the corrugated iron sculpture capital of the world) known for its antique shops and animal-shaped corrugated iron buildings.
Our first destination is Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, one of New Zealand’s most colourful and diverse geothermal area. Thousands of Years in the Making and rated as "One of the 20 Most Surreal Places in the World". This stunning landscape is nestled within a natural bush setting through which self-guided walks take between 45 and 90 minutes. A walk through this surreal, lunar-like environment provides the chance to witness some of the volcanic wonders and a wide range of amazing photo opportunities at unique features including the world-famous Champagne Pool, naturally coloured hot and cold springs, devil’s bath, bubbling mud pools, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations.
Be amazed by the majestic Huka Falls, an incredible waterfall that thunders 11m into the Waikato River below and boasts the title of being New Zealand's most visited natural attraction. This incredible waterfall is one of the most-visited natural attractions in New Zealand, it’s hard to tear your gaze away from the endless and mesmerising torrent. On return, experience Napier’s Art Deco heritage. Visit the world famous sights, suburbs, buildings and landmarks of our town. Take a walk back in time with a guided walking tour. Your local guide will tell you stories of the earthquake that destroyed the city and the remarkable recovery and rebuild that was completed in less than two years. Your guide on this tour will give you fascinating insights into Napier and the Art Deco style. Concludes with a short film and complimentary tea and coffee.
Visit Cape Kidnappers the world’s largest, most accessible mainland gannet colony. Ride in style and comfort over picturesque Cape Kidnappers Station in air-conditioned 4 x 4 vehicles – traversing riverbeds, broad rolling pastures, through stands of native bush, steep gullies and breath taking views. The birds can be seen from September to April. In September they return and build their nests ready for the arrival of the chicks during December and January. There is a stop on the way at a spectacular cliff top with panoramic views of Hawke Bay right across to the Mahia Peninsula. The amazing geology of the area can also be taken in.
