The Hanging Church
The Hanging Church, located in Coptic Cairo (Old Cairo), is named for its unique position perched above a gatehouse of the ancient Babylon Fortress. Its nave is suspended over a passageway, creating the distinctive “hanging” appearance that gives the church its name. Accessed by 29 steps, it was once called “The Staircase Church” by early travelers. Over the centuries, the ground level has risen by about six meters since the Roman era, burying much of the fortress tower beneath and softening the dramatic effect of the church’s elevated structure.
