The rail is a haven for nature lovers. Keep your eyes open for wild turkeys, songbirds, & other wildlife as you ride along marshside paths and through wooded clearings. But beneath your wheels lies another story.
This peaceful rail was once a busy railroad corridor. The rails connected the Seacoast to the wider world, carrying people, goods & even the famous beer produced by Portsmouth brewmaster Frank Jones.
The railroad also played a role in one of the Seacoast’s most chilling stories. In 1873, Lewis Wagner escaped after the infamous Smuttynose Island murders, beginning a flight that became part of one of New England’s most notorious murder mysteries.
Now, nature has reclaimed the corridor. Where locomotives once traveled, cyclists glide along flat, well-maintained crushed-stone paths surrounded by wetlands, forests, and the changing colors of the seasons.
