Mt. Yufu Grassland Private Hiking and Lunch

3 hours (approximately)
Offered in: Japanese and 1 more

This guided tour and lunch experience lets you discover the secrets of the beautiful Yufudake landscape.

In order to control pests, preserve the landscape and encourage the growth of new shoots, wild burning is carried out around March on Mt Yufudake. Experienced pastoral cooperatives set fire to dead awn and other plants, and the entire area is covered in black after the burning. Afterwards, flowers and grasses sprout, and by early May the landscape of fresh green Mt Yubudake can be seen. The landscape changes throughout the year, with greenery covering the area in summer and golden awns shining in autumn and winter.

This unique landscape and ecosystem is maintained by the local pastoral cooperative and volunteers who burn the fields.

A minimum of 4 people is required to book this tour.

What to expect

The pastures (grasslands) and forests surrounding the Yufuin Basin have been maintained by human intervention such as burning and grazing.
The pastures (grasslands) and forests surrounding the Yufuin Basin have been maintained by human intervention through burning and grazing. This is a valuable experience where visitors can learn about the other side of this symbolic landscape by observing the 'firebreaks' for burning, which are normally off-limits, and by being guided through the history, culture and efforts to maintain the grasslands. After the walk, a special restaurant will be set up in the meadow for the day, where you can enjoy a lunch (choice of boxed lunch or BBQ) of seasonal produce from Yufuin Onsen, which was originally a farming village, such as local Oita Bungo beef and freshly harvested vegetables.
Part of the proceeds from this experience will be used to support grassland maintenance initiatives.
