Kotohira Shrine, known as “Konpira-san,” is one of Japan’s most famous pilgrimage destinations, reached by climbing 785 stone steps. Rather than being a simple visit, the journey itself is an essential part of the experience, as pilgrims gradually ascend through the historic approach lined with gates, statues, and offerings. Along the way, visitors encounter traces of long-standing faith, including symbols of proxy pilgrimage and maritime devotion.
