Travel from Algarve to Lisbon
Downtown Lisbon, also called Baixa Pombalina or Lisboa Pombalina because it was built by order of the Marquis of Pombal, following the 1755 earthquake, covering an area of around 255 ha. It is located between Terreiro do Paço, next to the Tagus River, Rossio and Praça da Figueira, and longitudinally between Cais do Sodré, Chiado and Carmo, on one side, and the Cathedral and the hill of Castelo de São Jorge, from the other. Praça de D. Pedro IV, better known as Rossio (in the old spelling Rocio), is a square in downtown Lisbon and has been one of the city's nerve centers. In the Roman period there was a hippodrome.
Praça dos Restauradores is located in downtown Lisbon, at the southern end of Avenida da Liberdade, a few meters from Praça de Dom Pedro IV (better known as Rossio). The square is characterized by the high obelisk, 30 meters high, called the Monument to the Restauradores and inaugurated on April 28, 1886, at the cost of 45 contos de réis, which commemorates the country's liberation from Spanish rule on the 1st of December 1640.

The Padrão dos Descobrimentos (or Monument to the Discoveries; or Monument to the Navigators) is located in the parish of Belém, in the city and district of Lisbon, in Portugal. The architectural design was by Cottinelli Telmo and the sculptures were by Leopoldo de Almeida. In a prominent position on the right bank of the Tagus River, the original monument, made of perishable materials, was erected in 1940 on the occasion of the Portuguese World Exhibition to honor the historical figures involved in the Portuguese Discoveries. The current replica, in concrete and stone, is later, having been inaugurated in 1960.
The Castle of São Jorge, formerly Paço de Alcáçova, is located in the parish of Santa Maria Maior (Castelo), in the city and municipality of Lisbon, in Portugal. Classified as a National Monument since 1910, it stands in a dominant position on the highest hill in the historic center, providing visitors with one of the most beautiful views of the city and the Tagus River estuary.
