VELLINO is a small organic family winery, established in 2015 in eastern part of Georgia, Kakheti - biggest grape growing region of the country. Winemaking was our family tradition and that became the biggest motivator for us to keep and introduce this tradition to the world. Most of our wines are made exactly with this 8000 years old winemaking method, by long time skin contact process, in earthenware clay vessels - we call it Qvevri. The ideology about our wines is to be in a harmony with nature and create as healthy and high quality wines, as possible. Our wines are presented in 11 countries worldwide for that moment.
The Monastery of St. Nino at Bodbe is a Georgian Orthodox monastic complex and the seat of the Bishops of Bodbe located 2 km from the town of Sighnaghi, Kakheti, Georgia. Originally built in the 9th century, it has been significantly remodeled, especially in the 17th century. The monastery now functions as a nunnery and is one of the major pilgrimage sites in Georgia, due to its association with St. Nino, the 4th-century female evangelist of Georgians, whose relics are shrined there. The extant church – a three-nave basilica with three protruding apses – was originally built between the 9th and 11th centuries, but has been significantly modified since then. Both exterior and interior walls have been plastered and bear the traces of restoration carried out in the 17th and 19th centuries. It consists of a small hall church with an apse built over St. Nino’s grave that is integrated into a larger aisled basilica. A free-standing three-storey bell-tower was erected between 1862 and 1885.
Lunch and Beer! The Lost Ridge Inn, Brewery & Ranch is the very first of its kind in Georgia. Being travel designers & avid wanderers ourselves, they decided to create a distinctive destination with an atmosphere and comfort. Lost Ridge Brewing’s petite tasting room and expansive outdoor beer garden serves farmhouse style craft beers brewed onsite. Here in the land of winegrowers and wine drinkers, we’ve dared to be different. Using pure well water, hops and grains grown in premier beer nations of the world, plus local seasonal ingredients, we craft small-batch ales reflective of the wildness of this Georgian village setting. We experiment with herbs, spices and fruits grown in our own orchard and surrounding area, While any industrial brewery can churn out unimaginative bland lagers, Lost Ridge offers made-in-Georgia classic styles such as Belgian-inspired ales and Tripels, Saisons and Pacific Northwest-style IPA. Our special brews are bottled and aged in our onsite beer cave.
While it is today known as a city of love, Sighnaghi itself is a town born from conflict. The name itself is derived from the Turkish word for “shelter”, and it was a place where local population would hide during the invasions. This is evident today from the almost completely intact Sighnaghi Fortress walls that surround the entire town. The fortress was constructed in 1762 during the reign of King Erekle II to serve as a bastion of hope for both locals and residents of the surrounding villages. When raiders would threaten the area, people from across the region would retreat behind the city walls to wait out the worst their enemies could throw at them. In total, the length of the wall reaches four kilometers, with six gates and 23 towers, on which are inscribed the names of neighboring villages. A part of this impressively long wall can be walked on now - there is a special tourist path, from which you can marvel the view of Sighnaghi and Alazani Valley,
