Palacio Nacional e Jardins de Queluz

The Royal Palace of Queluz, also called the National Palace of Queluz, is a palace from the 18th century. The property was built as a summer recanto for D. Pedro de Bragança, having been one of the last large buildings in the Rococó style erected in Europe. It served as a discrete place of incarceration for Queen D. Maria I, while mad and especially after the death of D. Pedro, in 1786. After the fire that hit the Palácio da Ajuda in 1794, the Palace of Queluz became the official residence of the Portuguese Prince Regent, the future D. João VI and his family. It remained so until the Royal Family fled to Brazil in 1807, due to the French invasions.
