Patan is best known for its finest traditional crafts and rich artistic heritage. Local people form Patan involved in traditional handicrafts and cotton industries. Lalitpur is one of the best city to produce good number of talented artists and craftsmen. It is said that Patan is surrounded by four stupas, one at each corner of its cardinal points. It is believed to have been built by Indian Emperor Ashoka about 2250 years ago. Around the city we can find about 1200 Buddhist monuments of different shape and size scattered there.
