It has become the most popular meeting point in Puerto Plata. In fact, its beautiful park, also known as Plaza de la Independencia, is a national symbol. It was built as a tribute to General Gregorio Luperón. He offered this beautiful park to the city of Puerto Plata, when it was the Dominican capital.
About 100 meters from the Central Park on Calle Duarte, you will find the Ambar Museum. An excellent example of Victorian architecture that houses a unique collection of valuable samples of Dominican amber. Experts say this amber, known to be the most transparent in the world, qualifies as semi-precious. It is formed from tree sap that has hardened over millions of years, capturing many plant and insect fossils.
Residents of Puerto Plata proudly claim that theirs is the most beautiful boulevard (Malecón) in the Dominican Republic. Later, you'll see why when you see the many white-sand beaches that line the city's main avenue, each with a name. In addition to days on the beach within the city, the boulevard's long, shady sidewalk is ideal for morning or evening strolls - sunrises here are spectacular....
At the end of the boardwalk rests a key piece of the history of Puerto Plata, the San Felipe Fortress. Built by the Spanish in the 16th century to defend the north coast of the Dominican Republic from the British and Dutch, and from French pirates in search of the area's abundant gold and silver. Considered one of the most important colonial military structures in the Caribbean, completed in 1577, it later served as a prison and now a museum. Touring the fort reveals the original cannons facing the Atlantic, ancient weapons, and numerous hidden chambers.
Then, we will visit the “Del Oro” Chocolate Factory where you will see how handmade Dominican Chocolate is made. You will experience the quality of organic chocolate made with 100% cocoa beans harvested from the soil of the Dominican Republic.
Additionally, you will experience the taste of Puerto Plata rum made in Vinícola del Norte, the home of the great Macorix rum.
After a brief but thorough visit to Puerto Plata, you'll head to Cosita Rica beach, about a 10-minute drive away. Then you can relax in a complimentary chair, swim in the water, or enjoy a walk on the Puerto Plata beach. Additional drinks or bites to eat are available at the beach bar and restaurant (additional charges). Beach beds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
