For more than a millennium, Kannauj has been producing beautiful perfumes. Using age-old distillation methods that haven't altered since the Mughal Empire, the traditional craft of attar-making is being practised here. Entering a perfumery in Kannauj is like travelling back in time because of the enticing scent of the copper stills, sandalwood oil, rose petals, and vetiver roots. In addition to smelling the fragrances, guests get to meet the master perfumers and observe how they are created.

Step into a family-run perfumery where copper degs (stills) gently simmer petals, spices, and herbs. Watch the hydro-distillation process up close — from fresh rose petals being loaded into stills to the slow extraction of attar. Learn about unique fragrances like mitti attar (essence of baked earth after rain), rose, kewra, vetiver, and hina. Participate in a short blending session to create your own small vial of perfume.
See an impressive collection of Gupta-period sculptures, ancient coins, and terracotta figurines. Learn how Kannauj was once a thriving center for art, culture, and trade between the 4th and 12th centuries. The museum offers a fascinating contrast between Kannauj’s fragrant present and its glorious past.
