Sant’Angelo was built in the 2nd century as a mausoleum by order of emperor Hadrian. It was transformed into a fortress during the Middle Ages to defend the Pope. The Papal state also used Sant'Angelo as a prison; Giordano Bruno, for example, was imprisoned there for six years. With an imposing interior and also a courtyard, Castel Sant'Angelo is dominated by architecture and artefacts from imperial Rome, weapons and architecture from medieval Rome, and masterpieces from the Renaissance.
