Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, and the world's most famous sunrise. It is an astonishingly large and ambitious complex symbolising the power and majesty of the ancient Angkor civilisation.
Banteay Kdei is also known as 'the citadel of monk's cells'. It is partially overgrown with towering, sinous trees. The silk cotton tree roots weaving their way through the stones of the ruined walls is a famously beautiful sight.
Ta Prohm is a picturesque and attractive ruin partially retaken by jungle. It is also known as 'the Tomb Raider temple', made famous by Angelina Jolie in the 2001 film.
Ta Keo was never finished, and as such has a very different aspect to most of the Angkor temples. It's square, layered-pyramid shape makes it one of the more dramatic sites on the tour and climbing the terraces affords some beautiful views over the jungle.
Over 200 serene and smiling faces are carved into the temple's 37 remaining towers. These faces are believed to represent the Bodhisattva of compassion, Avalokiteshvara, or perhaps a deified likeness of King Jayavarman VII himself.
The terrace is a 350-meter-long, 2.5-meter-high ornamental wall and platform. The original grand audience hall and other palace buildings attached to it were made of perishable materials like wood and have since disappeared, leaving only the stone foundation.
The 6-meter-high, 25-meter-long structure features two walls with a narrow, hidden walkway in between. The inner wall, discovered during excavations in the late 1990s, contains particularly well-preserved, sharp carvings because it was covered by earth for centuries when the outer wall was added.
The site features a 200-meter-long elevated walkway that leads to the main structure, which is fully exposed to the sun.
