Saint-Émilion's history goes back to prehistoric times and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Romans had planted wine around Saint Emilion as early as the 2nd century. The rich history of this little town left many traces in the city center. Discover fascinating Romanesque churches, cloister, winding stone streets leading to quaint squares. Charming storefronts of small boutiques selling local products and handcrafted delicatessen. Arcachon, a coastal town in southwestern France, is known for its oyster harvesting. You will visit the winter town of Arcachon, a district rich in history for a journey through time. La ‘Ville l’hiver’ (winter town), is known for its extravagant 19th century villas, a frothy mix of styles including Swiss chalet, Moorish, Neo-classical, and neo-Gothic, all set in manicured gardens on wide pine-shaded streets. Visit the covered market gathering plenty of food stands with local delicacies.
From Arcachon pier we will take the ferry to Cap Ferret peninsula. (we will return to Arcachon the same way) In 30 minutes we will cross the beautiful bay. The bay’s sheltered waters serve as important wintering ground for migratory birds. From the ferry you will discover a completely different world and Dune du Pila, the highest sand dune in Europe.
Secluded, laid-back and authentic, the French oyster capital of Cap Ferret, on the Atlantic coast, is a haven for seaside sophistication. The iconic Cap Ferret lighthouse you see today dates from 1947. The first lighthouse, built in 1840, was destroyed by the Germans at the end of the war. You can still see the remains of the wartime bunkers. Optional lunch at the fish restaurant with a superb view over the whole bay – the oyster beds, the "Île aux Oiseaux", the ‘passes’ or access channels to the bay and the Dune du Pilat.
