Miss Potter bought the Monk Coniston estate, which included Tarn Hows, for £15,000, in 1929. She then sold half of the estate to the National trust, and left the other half to the trust in her will.
Coniston water is one of the most imposing and beautiful of the English lakes. The Lake is dominated by the "Old man of Coniston" which rises to 803 metres.
Passing through the village of Coniston we come to Yew tree farm. Owned by the National trust. Beatrix bought the farm back in 1930 and saved it from being turned into a forestry plantation.
