What to expect
Day 1: Arrival in Mekele – Explore Tigray Cliff Churches
Pickup Location & Identification:
Your guide will meet you at Mekele Airport or your hotel. Look for a sign reading “Arre Tours – [Your Name]”, and your guide will be wearing an Arre Tours badge for easy identification.
Route:
After a short briefing, enjoy a scenic 2-hour drive through the Tigray highlands to the Gheralta region. You’ll pass small villages, rock formations, and traditional tukuls — a beautiful cultural introduction to northern Ethiopia.
Activities:
• Visit Maryam Korkor and Daniel Korkor, cliff-top churches accessed via a moderate hike (~45 minutes up).
• Enjoy a homestyle lunch in a local village or eco-lodge.
• Sunset views over the Gheralta escarpment.
Overnight: Gheralta (budget lodge, mid-range hotel, or luxury eco-lodge, depending on your selection)

Day 2: Abuna Yemata Guh Hike – Scenic Drive to Axum
Morning Activity (Optional but Highly Recommended):
Start early with a climb to Abuna Yemata Guh, one of the world’s most dramatic churches, perched on a cliff 2,580 meters above sea level. The ascent includes a steep rock face (secured by guides and ropes) and narrow ledges — breathtaking both literally and visually.
Drive to Axum:
After lunch, embark on a 5- to 6-hour drive to Axum via Adwa, a scenic and historically significant route. Enjoy photo stops and commentary on sites such as the Adwa Mountains (site of the 1896 Ethiopian victory against Italian colonizers).

Day 3: Explore Ancient Axum – Departure
Activities:
• Visit the UNESCO-listed Obelisks, King Ezana’s Inscriptions, and Queen of Sheba’s Palace.
• Explore the Church of St. Mary of Zion, considered the resting place of the Ark of the Covenant (viewing of the actual Ark is not permitted, in keeping with Ethiopian Orthodox belief).
• Learn about Axumite civilization, pre-Christian kingdoms, and local legends from a certified guide.
Departure Drop-off:
Your driver will drop you at Axum Airport or your hotel. If departing later, we can arrange an optional local lunch or souvenir stop.
