At 8:00 a.m., you will be picked up from your hotel in Guatemala City and transferred to Antigua Guatemala, the most important and charming colonial city in the country. Founded by the Spanish in 1543, Antigua is today a beautiful blend of ruins, restored colonial buildings, and new structures built in colonial style. It was declared a “Monument of the Americas” in 1965. You will visit the Central Plaza, surrounded by the old Cathedral, the City Hall, and the Palace of the Captains General, as well as monasteries, colonial churches, and a jade factory where jade is crafted into fine and beautiful jewelry. In the afternoon, you will be transferred to Chichicastenango for your overnight stay
Today is market day in Chichicastenango! You will visit the largest and most colorful open-air indigenous market in Guatemala. Hundreds of indigenous people arrive from surrounding villages to sell and trade their products. You will also have the opportunity to witness religious ceremonies held in and around the Church of Santo Tomás, which is over 400 years old (shorts, swimsuits, and any type of photography inside the church are strictly prohibited). Afterwards, continue to Lake Atitlán, one of the most beautiful lakes in the world and one of Guatemala’s most famous natural wonders. Atitlán is the ideal place to experience Guatemalan folklore firsthand. Twelve indigenous villages surround the lake, and their inhabitants are descendants of the K’iche’, Kaqchikel, and Tz’utujil Maya groups. In the afternoon, transfer back to Guatemala City for your overnight stay. End of services.
