At 5895m, Mt. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain of Africa and is the highest free-standing mountain in the world.
There are seven established routes for a Kilimanjaro trek. As Moana Tanzania, we organize Kilimanjaro treks for all different routes. We make sure that the mountain trek will be enjoyable and a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Elevation: 1800m to 3000m, distance: 11 km, hiking time: 5-7 hours, habitat: rainforest Your journey will start from the Machame village and the nearby Machame gate. Todays trek will lead you through the rainforest to the first stop, the Machame camp.
Elevation: 3000m to 3850m, distance: 9 km, hiking time: 4-6 hours, habitat: moorland After leaving the rainforest behind us, we will continue on an ascending path, crossing the valley along a steep rocky ridge. The route will lead us onto a river gorge until we arrive at Shira camp.
Elevation: 3850m to 3950m, distance: 10 km, hiking time: 6-8 hours, habitat: semi desert From the Shira plateau we will continue towards the Kibo peak. You will pass the Lava tower (also called 'sharks tooth' ) and continue up to the Arrow Glacier. Overnight stay at Barranco camp.
Elevation: 3950m to 4040m, distance: 5 km, hiking time: 4-5 hours, habitat: alpine desert During the trek we pass the Barranco Wall to the Karanga Valley. You will stay overnight at the Karanga Camp.
Elevation: 4040m to 4700m, distance: 4 km, hiking time: 4-5 hours, habitat: alpine desert In the morning we leave Karanga and hit the junction which connects with the Mweka Trail. We continue up to the Barafu Hut. You have now completed the south circuit and you will rest and prepare for the summit at Barafu camp.
Elevation: 4700m to 5895m and down again to 3100m, hiking time 5-7 hours up, 5-7 hours down, habitat: icy summit You will start to summit between the Rebmann and Ratzell glaciers, making your way up to the Stella Point. Then you will summit the Uhuru peak, after which there will be time to celebrate and make pictures. After that, you will start the descent to Mweka Hut where you will stay overnight.
Elevation: 3100m down to 1650m, hiking time: 3-4 hours, habitat: forest At this last day of the trek, you will continue your descent from Mweka hut straight to Mweka gate.
