They are two pyroclastic cones formed north of Nicolosi, at an altitude of about 1,900 m, on the slopes of the Etna volcano. Their formation dates back to the eruption of 1892: this began on 9 July with the formation of a radial fracture, and therefore of a boutonniere of five craters, between 2025 and 1800 m, on the southern slope of the flanks of the volcano. It lasted 173 days and covered about 7 kilometres, until it touched the Monti Rossi on the eastern side, stopping just above Nicolosi, at an altitude of 970 m a.s.l.
This cavity is probably an outflow gallery of the Monpeloso eruptive apparatus formed in 252-253 AD. It consists of a 55 m long gallery with a characteristic pointed arch vault.
