The beating heart of ancient Rome, the Roman Forum was the political, religious and commercial center, rich in temples and ruins between the Palatine Hill and the Capitoline Hill. Originally it was a marshy area, reclaimed in the seventh century BC.C... During the Middle Ages it was known as "Campo Vaccino" because it was used as a pasture. It includes the Basilica Giulia, the Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, the Niger Lapis (alleged tomb of Romulus), the Arch of Septimius Severus, the Arch of Titus, the Temple of the Vestals, the Temple of Venus and Rome, and the basement of the Temple of Julius Caesar, where his ashes are said to have been scattered.
The Palatine Hill, the historical and mythological heart of Rome, offers recent archaeological discoveries, including a monumental late-Republican domus near the Roman Forum. It shows remains of Romulus' huts, imperial palaces (Domus Augustana/Tiberiana), the House of Livia, wife of Emperor Octavian Augustus and the House of the Griffins. In addition, you can admire the Farnesian Gardens, commissioned by Alessandro Farnese and built by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola in the sixteenth century. The tour concludes with a view from the panoramic terrace that allows you to admire the entire archaeological area of the Roman Forum, but also the panorama of the historic center of Rome.
