    Spanning a 15-acre estate that is located around 10 kilometres to the northwest of the town of Kegalle, the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF) is a charity that rescues and subsequently cares for captive Asian elephants in Sri Lanka. It raises money for its activities through tourist fees and volunteer programs. The funds it raises are then used to improve the conditions and care it provides for its elephants, as well as to run educational programs for local farmers and their families, raising awareness of the importance of protecting local wild elephants.

    Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project

    The Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery is approximately 40 minutes from Taru Villas - 906 in Hikkaduwa and is the perfect place to catch a glimpse of the endangered turtles that visit Sri Lanka. The hatchery provides a sanctuary to turtle eggs and injured turtles; by rehabilitating them. To protect the population of turtles that visit the shores to nest, the hatchery collects and safeguards the eggs within their premises until they are ready to hatch and make their way back home to the big blue. You might even get a chance to release some hatchlings back into the ocean; making it the perfect holistic experience for anyone.
