  Mount Victoria Lookout

  At the lookout, there are information panels and a carved wooden pou. Just below the summit, you’ll find the Byrd Memorial, dedicated to American polar explorer and aviator Richard Byrd. There is also a cast iron cannon that used to be fired at noon each day between 1877 and 1900, so colonial Wellingtonians could set their watches and clocks to keep time.

  Wellington Wind Turbine

  The original Brooklyn wind turbine was installed by the Electricity Corporation of New Zealand in March 1993. It was part of a research project on how wind turbines performed in New Zealand conditions. It then became part of Meridian when our company was formed in 1999. In winds of 50-80 kilometres per hour the turbine generated up to 225 kilowatts of electricity – enough for around 110 average New Zealand homes. Power generated by the turbine was fed into the local energy network for general distribution in Wellington. In April 2016 Meridian upgraded the turbine with a larger one that generates enough renewable energy to power around 490 average New Zealand homes.

  Wellington Cable Car

  For over 120 years, the Cable Car has trundled up and down the Kelburn hillside. Ferrying commuters, students, and tourists between Lambton Quay, Victoria University, and the Botanic Gardens. The five-minute trip has become a Wellington must-do for tourists. Every 10 minutes, the bright red Wellington Cable Car departs from Lambton Quay and makes its way up into the hills of Kelburn. The 612m journey travels through three tunnels and over three bridges. Once you’ve reached the top you’ll have risen 120m above sea level. The views of the city below and harbour and hills beyond are, predictably, spectacular.

  Lady Norwood Rose Garden

  The Lady Norwood Rose Garden is situated in the Wellington Botanical Gardens, only a short walk or drive from downtown Wellington. There are 110 beds set out in a formal geometic design with columnades on three sides and the Begonia House as a backdrop. The flowering season starts in November and continues until the end of April. Each bed contains a different variety of rose, ranging from old favourites to recently released varieties. David Austin, patio and climbing roses are on show around the perimeter of the gardens. A trial garden on the western side monitors new varieties for three years before a decision is made on their inclusion in the gardens. The roses are cared for using an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) program which uses monitoring to determine pest and disease control, with low toxicity chemicals and natural predators such as ladybirds used. In 2015, the Lady Norwood Rose Garden received the Garden of Excellence award from the World Federation of Rose Societies.

  ( Available Tuesday to Saturday)A favourite amongst Wellingtonians, Ortega Fish Shack is a must go-to seafood restaurant within the city, a local institution perfect for any occasion. The two-story building, built in 1886, is decked out with nautical blue walls, marine themed portraits and quirky collectables. There’s seating on both levels, a popular bar with comfy stools and private dining rooms on the top level. Led Davey McDonald with head chef Teresa Pert, the food, service and overall environment are excellent. The team is genuine, knowledgeable and especially helpful when it comes to navigating the menu and matching dishes to the outstanding wine and beer lists. The focus at Ortega is on the food and wine, and the centre point for ritual they create around the table. Start the evening with freshly basked bread and delicious ocean treats such as oysters and ceviche For the mains there’s a concise selection of dishes with the spotlight on fish presented many ways.

For the past 29 years, the Bistro has welcomed visitors and locals alike with warm hospitality, fine food cooked with care, and a well chosen wine list, all served in a relaxed atmosphere. The kitchen sources the freshest seasonal produce available, and are always happy to accommodate dietary requirements and requests. The charming inner-city Gothic cottage was originally built as a wedding gift by a local groom for his bride to be in the late 1870s and came into the possession of the Plimmer family in 1911. Bookings can be made for lunch, but no need to book for dinner as it is casual dining. We have set menus for 10 or more if you are organising a function. The private dining room seating 10 - 16 for lunch or dinner is also perfect for conferences or work functions with full catering services to suit your needs.

  Zealandia Te Mara a Tane

  Just minutes away from Wellington CBD, Zealandia Te Māra a Tāne is the world's first fully-fenced urban ecosanctuary, home to many of Aotearoa New Zealand's rarest wildlife. Within the safety of our introduced predator-proof fence surrounding 225ha (555 acres), native species of birds, reptiles, fish, insects, and even plants live wild with no enclosures.
