Il Vesuvio è un vulcano attivo, nell'Europa continentale, nonché uno dei più studiati e pericolosi al mondo, a causa dell'elevata popolazione e delle sue caratteristiche esplosive, la cima raggiunge i 1.281 metri. Si arriva al cratere con una passeggiata di 20/25 minuti in salita. Il biglietto d'ingresso al cratere include una guida interna (2 ore). Ercolano fu sepolta sotto metri di cenere e pomice dalla catastrofica eruzione del Vesuvio del 79 d.C. Una guida privata professionale è altamente raccomandata per visitarla al meglio nelle sue strutture più importanti.
