Dazaifu Tenmangu is a venerable shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, known as the god of learning. Within the grounds is the sacred tobiume plum tree, which is over a thousand years old, and is said to continue to tell the legend of Michizane. The Honden (Main Sanctuary) is undergoing large-scale renovations until around 2026, so during the renovation period, the tour will visit the temporary shrine which features an eye-catching design that blends in with nature. After touring the grounds with the National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter, customers are allotted free time for lunch. At the approach road, there are many shops selling food that visitors can enjoy while walking around such as the specialty umegae-mochi, so feel free to enjoy an unguided stroll. *Food and drink charges during lunch are not included in the tour booking charge. Customers are to pay for the charges themselves.
On the Yanagawa river cruise, take a leisurely 30-minute tour aboard a small "donko" boat operated by an experienced boatman through the canals of Yanagawa, a city famous for its waterways that have existed since the Edo period (1603-1868). The boatman's witty narration and skillful steering using a pole add excitement to the trip, and the special experience of passing under a low bridge just above the water's surface is another highlight. On this tour, relish some tea and sweets on a charter boat experience unlike the usual river cruise. Feel as if you've traveled back in time and enjoy a Japanese-style teatime along with historical scenery. *In case of rain, customers will wear poncho-style raincoats rented out free of charge.
Visit two facilities that offer the opportunity to learn about the history of the Tachibana family, who were once feudal lords of the Yanagawa domain. Yanagawa Ohana conveys the dignity of a feudal lord's residence from the Edo period (1603-1868) to the modern age. The beautiful Japanese garden and traditional architecture are in harmony, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery throughout the seasons. Experience the samurai culture of the past surrounded by the scent of tatami mats and wooden structures. At the nearby Tachibana Museum, approximately 10,000 valuable items are on display, including a national treasure sword, armor, and ancient documents. By visiting both facilities, customers can experience and gain a deeper insight into the profound history and culture of the Tachibana family.
