    Palazzo Pitti

Palazzo Pitti, on the south bank of the Arno in Florence, began as a 15th-century banker's residence before the Medici acquired it in 1550, turning it into their grand ducal seat. Its massive rusticated façade reflects centuries of expansion under the Medici, Lorraine, and Savoy dynasties, who all lived there. The palace complex today houses several museums and opens onto the Boboli Gardens behind it. The Palatine Gallery (Galleria Palatina), on the piano nobile, is the palace's artistic core. Established by the Lorraine rulers in the early 19th century, it displays roughly 500 masterpieces from the Medici collections, hung densely in gilded frames across richly decorated salons—arranged for visual effect rather than chronology, in the style of historic picture galleries. It holds the world's largest concentration of Raphael paintings, alongside works by Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens, and Tintoretto, beneath Pietro da Cortona's frescoed "Planet Rooms."
