I'm a Hmong mother of 4 children and I've lived in Ta Van, Sapa my entire life. I started working as a guide, running treks in the mountains and rice terraces when I was a teenager. I love my family and my community, and I have been working hard to make a better life for all of us. I love sharing with my guests the local Hmong culture. I've practiced Hmong textile traditions for more than 15 years.
In recent years, I've also traveled to villages in the mountainous northern Vietnam to learn more about traditional textiles and natural dyes of different ethnic groups. Hmong batik and indigo dye is an art that I love so much, and I run this workshop because I deeply feel the responsibility to preserve it and to share it with more people.

What to expect

We start in the morning at around 9:30am after arriving at Indigo Snail Boutique Homestay, Ta Van village. We have been practicing the traditional techniques for many years and will share our knowledge with you. First we do batik you will be given 2 pieces of cloth. The first piece is made using traditional Hmong symbols in hot wax using a bamboo tool . The second piece you are free to create your own design.

The next step is the process of natural indigo dyeing, the cloth is dipped in the dye vat that we prepare. It takes time as the process requires many dips and the cloths need to rest between dips. Repeated dips deepen the color and make the dye long lasting. The wax will later be boiled out of it so you will have your finished pieces by the next morning at the earliest, or normally after 2-3 days. If you don't stay at my home then I will send the finished pieces to your address in Sapa.

We have a lunch break from approximately 12 to 1:30pm at my home (home-cooked family style lunch). In the afternoon you will learn Hmong embroidery, you will be given a piece of cloth and detailed instructions to embroider some patterns to create a bracelet. Finish at around 4pm.
