Take a walk through Rio’s downtown area known as Little Africa and learn about the history of the port district. Take the light rail to the Pretos Novos Institute and visit the Pretos Novos Cemetery, a memorial to the slave trade. Continue on to the Machado de Assis House and Valongo Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Explore the Jardim Suspenso and Morro da Conceição, with their historic houses. Be sure to visit spots like Pedra do Sal, a famous samba hotspot, the Hilário de Jovino Mosaic, and the Bandeira do Brasil staircase. All great spots for photos.
