What to expect

The city presents beautiful contemporary buildings, combined with historic colonial houses. With an estimated population of about three million, Dakar is a vibrant and bustling city with vibrant open-air markets, café terraces and delicious food. It's a shopper's paradise, where you can find exquisite crafts in markets, streets and shops all over the city. Highlights include the Presidential Palace, the Independence Garden, the African Renaissance monument, the old French cathedral, the old tram station, the Fundamental Institute of Black Africa (IFAN) , cultural and scientific institute of the nations of the former French West Africa. Founded in Dakar, Senegal, in 1938, it had its headquarters in what is today the building of the Museum of Black Civilization. Its mandate is to study the language, to restore African history and to promote the local cultures of peoples governed by French colonialism in Africa.
