This tour is all about uncovering the exciting Street Art and Graffiti culture of Johannesburg while also learning a bit more about the City itself.
As we move through the streets, we will see some iconic pieces by local and international artists and share the stories and inspirations behind some of them...very beautiful to hear about!
Something we enjoy doing is also explaining the difference between Graffiti VS Street Art...yes, there is a cultural difference between the two and you'll never look at them the same again!
Since we are on the ground, we enjoy chatting about the rich history and complex dynamics of Johannesburg to provide you with a better understanding of the (inner) city and areas we visit.

Skinner is the beautiful green cafe at the corner of Juta and De Beer Street that is very hard to miss - order yourself a coffee or snack while you wait for your tour to start!
We end the iconic Curiocty Backpackers in Maboneng - known for hosting travellers from all over the world, it's one of the best places in the City you find tourists and locals hanging out together!
Braamfontein (or "Braam" as locals call it) is the hub of contemporary street and youth culture in "Joburg" (short for Johannesburg!). It has some of the City's best Street Art and Murals done by local and international artists and also very popular amongst young people who love Street Culture! Be prepared to see some of the City's best dressed residents as this is where a lot of them come to hangout and exchange tips of contemporary street wear! One of the coolest places in Joburg and home to the 2nd oldest bar in Johannesburg!
Grayscale is Johannesburg's ONLY specialist Graffiti Store where most Graffiti Artists/Writers buy the supplies from! You can meet some of the City's best Graffiti Artists here as they come in and out on a regular basis and even buy some of the merchandise on sale that is designed by local Graffiti and Street Artists! Enjoy the exhibitions on show on a monthly basis highlighting the work of some of South Africa's most iconic Street and Graffiti Artists!
Newtown is the spiritual home of all forms of Arts and Culture in Johannesburg i.e. this is one of the first areas in Johannesburg where Art and Culture played an important role in bringing people together from diverse backgrounds! This is where you see some of Joburg's oldest Graffiti and how it has transformed over the years - home to the biggest Hip Hop Festival in Africa "Back to the City" you can expect to find new work here on a regular bases as artist from all over come leave their mark here! It's also one of the few areas in South Africa that uses Graffiti to archive South Africa's musical history with iconic figures found all across the walls of this area i.e. "Wall of Icons" This is where the Graffiti Culture in Joburg became popular and to this day the area is very popular for it's underground and warehouse party culture!
Voted as one of the World's Coolest Neighborhoods in 2018 (Forbes), the Maboneng Precinct is both an entertainment and culture destination! Apart from the large mix of bars and restaurants you'll find on its streets, you can also see a rich collections of street art, murals, galleries and cool art all over its walls - you will also get to meet some of the local artists who work and sell their art from the streets! The Maboneng Precinct is by far the coolest district in the inner City that is very popular amongst locals on weekends for it's nightlife! If you're a fan of street culture, then this neighborhood is definitely one that you'll enjoy visiting! (After the tour, feel free to try one of the restaurants in this area before heading back to your hotel!)
