The Transfagarasan road was built as a strategic military route, and it is the highest (2042m) and most dramatic paved road in Romania. It runs North to South across the highest sections of the Carpathian Mountains, the Fagaras Mountains, connecting the historic regions of Transylvania and Wallachia. The Fagaras Mountains are the highest mountains of Romania and the Carpathian range with highest peak Moldoveanu (2544m.) The road passes nearby Balea Lac, a natural glacier lake situated at 2035m altitude and it’s 360 meters long, 240 meters wide and 11 meters deep and Balea Waterfall with its 60 meters height being one of the most famous waterfalls in Romania.

Balea Lake is one of the most visited lakes in Romania. The lake is also a reservation and near it, in winter, you can find the first ice hotel built in Eastern Europe.
