This unique historic ensemble has been called the ‘Acropolis of Baku’, Old City or Icherisheher. The Old City territory includes the Shirvanshah Palace, Synyk Kala minaret, Maiden Tower, “Bayil Stones”, Seyid Yahya Bakuvi mausoleum, caravanserais – the Multani and Bukharian caravanserai, Mollahana, numerous mosques – Muhammad ibn Abu-Bakr, bath-houses, Baku Khans’ House and also numerous rich residences of the ХIХ century.

    Palace of the Shirvanshahs

    Shirvanshahs’ Palace - Once home to the Shirvanshahs that ruled most of today’s Azerbaijan between 9th-16th centuries, this UNESCO World Heritage Site in Baku was constructed in the highest point of Icherisheher between the 12th-14th centuries. Not only is the palace a timeless example of medieval Islamic architecture, but also a contemporary museum.

    Maiden Tower

    The Maiden Tower is so old, we can’t tell what it was originally meant for. It may have been a Zoroastrian fire temple, an observatory, or a fortress. Maybe it was a watchtower, as it certainly gives incredible views across Baku and the Caspian Sea.

    Bukhara caravanserai constructed in late 15th century over the trade highway of Icherisheher in Baku. The caravanserai has a quadratic shape and salient portal and, its yard is octagonal. Caravanserai surrounded by balconies and personal premises – chapels along the perimeter

    Multani caravanserai was built in the 15th century for Indian merchants, fire worshipers, who came from the city of Multan in India (present-day territory of Pakistan).Like the majority of caravanserais, Multani caravanserai has a square shape. There was a well in the courtyard. Along the perimeter of the building there were cells for individual housing.

    Ateshgah - Fire Temple

    Ateshgah (Fire Temple) - the fire-worshipping Zoroastrians left their mark at Ateshgah, where the Fire Temple amazes visitors with its spouts of flame. The present temple only dates from the 17-19th century, though, as the site was adopted by the Hindu merchants trading in nearby Baku.

    Yanardag (Fire Mountain) - just 20 minutes drive from Ateshgah you might notice a strange orange glow rising from the hillside near the low pass. That’s because the hill itself is on fire. Gas escaping from subterranean flues has been burning incessantly for decades and now attracts the curious from all over the world. Drive back to the hotel.
