    In the 16th century, this square did not exist, with most of its area occupied by the Hospital Real de Todos os Santos, the most important in Lisbon. After the great earthquake of 1755, which destroyed most of the city, the hospital was greatly damaged and was demolished around 1775. The large area previously occupied by the hospital was turned into an open market square, and in the late 19th century, a large covered market was built. This market existed until 1949, when it was demolished. Since then, the square has been an open space.     Praca Dom Pedro IV

    Officially named King Pedro the 4th square, Rossio translates as a large gathering space. It's the heart of the Baixa downtown area, surrounded by late 18th-century buildings from the city reconstruction plan issued by Marquês de Pombal after the 1755 earthquake. From here, you have access to walking streets towards the Riverside, through RUA Augusta and Praça do Comércio. It is actually still one of the biggest city squares in Europe.     Surrounded by 19th and early 20th century buildings, this square is dedicated to the restoration of the independence of Portugal, december 1st. 1640, after sixty years of Spanish domination. The obelisk in the middle of the square, from 1886, carries the names and dates of the battles fought during the Portuguese Restoration War after 1640. From here begins Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon's main central boulevard with large sidewalks decorated by the portuguese "calçada", a traditional art still done by hand piece by piece with light and dark stone cubes.     Sebastião José de carvalho e Melo, was the state secretary of King D. José I at the time of the 1755 earthquake.
