SHAHI Zinda is a monument of medieval architecture in Samarkand, an ensemble of mausoleums of the Karakhanid and Timurid nobility. Until the XVI century, it was called the Sheikh's Mazar, meaning Kusam ibn Abbas. Since the XVI century, the complex owes its name to the legend Shoh-i Zinda — "the living king". It says that the cousin of the Prophet Muhammad, Qusam ibn Abbas, came to Samarkand with a small army to establish Islam. During one of the pagan raids, Kusam ibn Abbas was struck by an arrow, but managed to hide from the eyes of the infidels in the crevice that formed (according to another version, in a well), where he lives to this day.

    Hazrat Khizr Mosque

HAZRATI KHIZR MOSQUE - The first mention of the mosque dates back to the period of the Arab conquest of Sogd (the beginning of the VIII century). According to legend, after the capture of Samarkand by Kutyiba's troops in 712, the Arabs tried to flood the city fortress (kala) by damming the Jui-Arzis canal. However, a huge white bird descended from the sky, which destroyed the dam. In commemoration of this event, one of the companions of Kuteiba, Muhammad ibn Vasi, built the Hazret-Khizra mosque on the site of the Zoroastrian temple revered by the Sogdians at the southern tip of Afrasiab at the Iron Gate.
