Tuanis Surf School was founded by Sofie who runs the school alongside her Costa Rican partner Rory and a passionate team of local instructors. We welcome surfers of all ages and experience levels. With experience teaching children as young as three, our instructors know how to make surfing fun, supportive and accessible for all. Surfing truly is a wonderful way for families to share an adventure.

Our vision is to make surfing more accessible, welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. Sofie has a background in child development psychology and experience working with children with special needs. Her passion for working with children is reflected in our patient, inclusive and supportive approach to teaching.

As a female-owned surf school, we’re proud to work with female surf instructors. Over the years, we’ve introduced hundreds of women to surfing and helped them build a lasting connection with the ocean. We’re passionate about creating a space where everyone feels welcome.

Meeting and pickup

Meeting point

All surf lessons take place at Sámara Beach, but the exact meeting spot may vary from lesson to lesson depending on the ocean conditions, tides, and your surfing experience and skill level. We’ll always confirm the meeting location with you before your lesson.

What to expect

Our lessons are taught in small groups, with a maximum of three to four students per instructor, depending on the students’ level and needs. This allows us to provide personal attention while keeping every lesson fun, safe and supportive.

Lesson options:
Group Lessons: 2 hours
Private Lessons: 1.5 hours

What’s included? All surf equipment is provided: Surfboard- Rash guard- Leash. Just bring your swimwear, water and sunscreen!

When do we surf? We schedule our lessons around the tides to give you the best possible surfing conditions. Since the tide times change daily, your lesson time will depend on your chosen date.

At Sámara Beach, surfing close to high tide generally offers the best conditions for our lessons.

What to expect: Every lesson starts on the beach with an introduction, a warm-up and some surf theory tailored to your level. We’ll discuss your goals and practice the essential movements before heading into the water.

Once you’re in the ocean, your instructor will stay close by to guide, support and coach you as you catch waves and build confidence.

For safety reasons, children under 8 years old are required to take private lessons with a dedicated instructor.
