Located between Paarl and Franschoek on the R301 road is the Groot Drakenstein Prison that was the home to Nelson Mandela for the last 14 months of his long political imprisonment. This is still a working prison and therefore no tours conducted inside unless you wish to stay for the weekend. you can get to have your picture taken in front of the memorial of Nelson Mandela with his fist pumped signaling freedom.
